The challenges of leading his basketball team on the court or guarding the highest-scoring opponent in virtually every game never fazed Tom Mellor. The reliable point guard helped take his teammates to two of the best records ever assembled by a JWU Junior College basketball team -- a 17-7 record in 1964-65 and a 20-4 mark in 1965-66. A co-captain on the 1965-66 team that beat Dean Jr. College in the NJCAA playoffs, Mellor’s career average of six assists per game still ranks among the best in school history. After graduating from Johnson & Wales, Mellor attended Husson College and went on to a long and outstanding career in education administration in Maine. A successful high school baseball and basketball coach, he was also a longtime baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer official in the Pine Tree State.
