With extraordinary vision and leadership, Dr. Yena laid the groundwork for Johnson & Wales University to develop from junior college to the institution it is today. When he began his teaching career at Johnson & Wales Junior College, he was the architect behind the highly successful Wildcat basketball program. As an assistant coach, he was the driving force behind the recruitment of some of the great players of the late 60's and early 70's, including Hall of Famers Nate Adger and Jim Gary. His love for basketball and athletics spanned his distinguished career at JWU, from his junior college days to his successful tenure as president. Under Yena's guidance, JWU became an NCAA member, continuing to stress the importance and value of intercollegiate athletics within the core philosophy of the institution.
