As Johnson & Wales began its first seasons of competition in the NCAA, Lanis Sapp of Atlantic City, New Jersey, established the records of excellence that players on future teams would strive to reach. From 1994 to 1997, Sapp led JWU’s first three four-year varsity teams in points, rebounds, and assists. He registered 434 points in the 1996-97 season, a record that stood until 2002. His 94 assists in 1995-96 and his 183 rebounds in 1996-97 gave him two more records that stood until 2001. Sapp became the first player in Johnson & Wales NCAA history to score over 1,000 points on February, 1,1997 in venerable Delaney Gymnasium. In 70 games over the first three NCAA seasons at Johnson & Wales, Sapp scored 1,144 points, took down 424 rebounds, and handed out 256 assists. He was also the first Johnson & Wales men’s basketball player to receive Great Northeast Athletic Conference post-season honors when he was named to the all-league second team in 1997.
