A dominant force on Johnson & Wales volleyball teams from 2001 to 2004, Proto was a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) First Team  selection four times, and was a two-time Great Northeast Athletic Conference Player of the Year; winning as a freshman in 2001, and as a senior in 2004. Leading the Wildcats to the GNAC title in 2001 and 2002, she was the GNAC Tournament Most Valuable Player each year, and won a third all-tournament award in 2004. The first Wildcat and the first GNAC volleyball player ever to earn All-New England honors, she set JWU records in eleven different career or seasonal categories. Proto was the first player in the GNAC with over 1,500 kills (1,504) and 1,500 digs (1,517). She graduated as the GNAC career record holder with 4,291 attacks and was among the league’s top ten career leaders in numerous categories.
