The first NCAA All-American in the history of Johnson & Wales University in any sport, wrestler James Gilbert was the personification of student-athlete excellence. Gilbert - who wrestled mostly at 157 or 165 pounds - was regionally ranked throughout his entire four-year career. After winning the New England 165-pound title in his senior year, he took a 36-2 record into the 2002 NCAA National Championships, where he finished seventh, thus earning a berth on the NCAA Division III All-American team at 165 pounds. The first to ever record over 100 wins in a Johnson & Wales career, Gilbert won 123 matches from 1999-2002, including 37 by pin. A three-time Scholar All-American as recognized by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, the entrepreneurship major from Bristol, New Hampshire, set numerous team records, including season and career takedowns, near falls, and victories.
