In 1973 at Roswell, New Mexico, he finished 20th in the nation at the NJCAA Championships and earned another respectable finish in the 1974 event in Lakeland, Florida. Upon his graduation from JWU, Martins went to college in Texas and won the first of what would be several notable tournaments, the 1975 Pecan Valley Invitational. He won the 1977 New England Public Links title and turned professional in 1979. He played in the PGA Tour's Greatest Hartford Open in 1984 and 1985 and played in the B.C.
