Box Score 2 The Johnson & Wales Baseball team won a pair of games against the Norwich Cadets on Saturday afternoon behind strong starting pitching in both games. JWU improves to 6-17 (5-3 GNAC) while Norwich dropped to 11-10 (3-6 GNAC).
Game 1: JWU 7, Norwich 2
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning on a Xavier Bothelo (Rehoboth, Mass.) groundout that plated Riley Hasson. After the Cadets tied it, a pair of two run hits from Miles Kelly (East Setauket, N.Y.) and Owen Davis (Bristol, Conn.) in the bottom of the fifth inning gave JWU a 5-1 lead.
The Cadets grabbed one back in the top of the sixth inning before Kelly drove home two more on a single in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving JWU a 7-2 lead. Matt Klarberg (Wayne, N.J.) pitched the final innings, getting three out to give JWU the 7-2 victory.
Dane DellaValle (Howell, N.J.) pitched the first six innings of the game, scattering nine hits, allowing two runs and striking out eleven batters.
Game 2: JWU 2, Norwich 1
The second game was a pitchers' duel, with the Wildcats totaling two hits and the Cadets totaling four.
JWU opened the scoring on a sacrifice fly by EJ Leone (Peabody, Mass.) in the bottom of the fourth inning. Both Kelly and Bothelo scored on the play, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Norwich got one run back in the top of the fifth, but the Wildcats closed out the game taking a 2-1 victory.
Kyle Cutler (East Hampton, Conn.) pitched a complete game for the Wildcats, earning the victory with nine strikeouts over seven innings.
JWU gets right back on the diamond tomorrow for a second GNAC double header od the weekend, taking on the Lasell Lasers at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex at 1:00pm.
