Dwyer's grand slam sends JWU to 9-8 win over Springfield

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Jack Dwyer smacked a grand slam in a seven-run fifth inning to propel the JWU (Providence) baseball team to a 9-8 win over Springfield College Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Sophomore Yedan Diaz also drove in two runs with a double as the Wildcats notched win No. 13 on the season.

JWU trailed 2-0 in the fifth when Diaz double down the right field line tied the game. After freshman Dimitri Staphos recorded an RBI when he was hit with the bases loaded, Dwyer homered over the left field fence to put his team ahead 7-2.

Now 7-5 in the eighth, redshirt senior Ryan Ducey doubled in freshman Sam Schoenberg and senior Jack Obert scored on a wild pitch to stretch the lead to 9-5. The Pride (22-14) got three back in the ninth and pushed the tying run to second base before sophomore Daniel Heisler picked up the final two outs for his first save of the season

Junior Colin Nockles allowed eight hits and five runs with two walks and four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work for JWU. Freshman Jake Scharlat picked up the win in relief as he surrendered three hits and three runs (one earned) with a walk and a strikeout over 2.2 IP.
