Box Score 2 The Johnson & Wales Baseball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Sunday against the Blazers of Elms College. Following the doubleheader, JWU sits at 13-21 (11-5 GNAC) while Elms is 12-17 (6-9 GNAC).
Game 1: Elms 9, JWU 3,
Elms opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third inning with a grand Slam from Cole Blades. JWU responded with a Xavier Bothelo (Rehoboth, Mass.) home run in the top of the fourth inning, cutting the lead in half. Jack Magane (Walpole, Mass.) drove in one more run in the top of the fifth, but the Wildcats were unable to overcome the deficit, falling 9-3.
Game 2: JWU 8, Elms 7
The Wildcats responded in game two, opening up the game with a three-run home run by Nicolas Fortes (Cranston, R.I.) to take a 3-0 lead. The Blazers grabbed two in the bottom of the frame, cuttgin the Wildcat advantage to one after one inning.
The Wildcats added two in the top of the fourth inning, with Juan and Bothelo both hitting RBI doubles, restoring their three run advantage. Over the fourth and fifth innings, the Blazers took a 7-5 lead by scoreing five runs, headlined by a two RBI single from AJ Cook in the bottom of the fifth.
After EJ Leone (Peabody, Mass.) doubled home Magane in the top of the sixth, the Wildcats added two in the top of the seventh, with a sacrifice fly from Magane to bring home Owen Davis (Bristol, Conn.) as the winning run.
Matt Klarberg (Wayne, N.J.) earned the victory for the Wildcats, pitching the last three innings.
JWU gets back on the diamond on Thursday when they welcome the Anchormen of Rhode Island College for a cross-town matchup that will be senior day for our graduating seniors.
