Peyton Ellis have been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Wrestler and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
Soda was named Most Outstanding Wrestler at this past weekend's Ithaca Open following a pair of wins over nationally-ranked opponents, including defending national champion Josh Wilson from Greensboro. Following a 5-1 OT win over James Rodriguez from Vermont St.-Castleton, Soda secured a pin in 1:57 against Wilson to win the 141 lb. bracket.
Ellis went 5-0 at 133 lbs., highlighted by three wins via pin in less than two minutes. The Coventry, Rhode Island native went on to take down Andrew Marchese (VTSU) via majority decision (16-5) in the semis before picking up a 6-3 win over Isais Torres (Ithaca) – the No. 5 wrestler in the National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings – in the finals.
The Wildcats return to action Friday afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. match against Wis.-Whitewater.
