Richardson claims fifth, Rivera takes sixth at nationals

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – JWU (Providence) junior Jack Richardson (165 lbs.) and freshman Nico Rivera (125 lbs.) placed fifth and sixth, respectively, at the 2025 NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championship Saturday afternoon. Both student-athletes secured All-American honors on Friday.

Richardson opened Saturday by knocking off No. 4 seed Aidan Smith (Adrian) in overtime, 8-5, to advance in the blood round. The Danielson, Connecticut native dropped his next match to No. 7 seed Brayden Peet (Wis.-Whitewater), 4-3, before avenging Friday's loss to top-seeded Clayton McDonough (Luther) by defeating him in the wrestleback, 16-9

Rivera, meanwhile, with a 2-1 win over No. 9 seed Brett Birchman (Wartburg). The Providence, Rhode Island native then took down No. 7 seed Madon Jones (Manchester), 3-0, before falling to Kurt Mokros (Ohio Northern), 13-1.

Rivera finished his first national championship tournament in sixth place and closed his season with a record of 34-7. In the process, he becomes the first freshman in JWU history to earn AA honors in a contested NCAA Tournament.
