ROANOKE, Va. – Junior Hayden Brown, sophomore Dylan Harr, and freshman Joziah Fry have each earned All-America status with a pair of wins on day one of the 2023 NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championship at The Berglund Center.
Brown defeated Jake Buford (Wisconsin-Whitewater) via fall in the first round of the 149 lb. tournament via fall. In the second round, he secured a 6-1 win over No. 7 seed Charlie Stuhl (Augsburg) to advance to the round of 16 and guarantee himself All-America honors.
Fry, meanwhile, pinned Luke Hoerie (Stevens) in the opening round of the 125 lb. bracket in 2:01 before earning a 3-2 win over No. 8 seed Brady Koontz (Dubuque) to advance to the round of 16. The Coventry, Rhode Island native and No. 1 seed now carries a 41-0 record into Saturday's final day of competition. He has also guaranteed himself All-America status.
Sophomore Dylan Harr lost a 13-2 majority decision in his opening round bout to No. 2 seed Massoma Endene (Wartburg) in the 197 lb. bracket. He rebounded with a fall victory over Parker Venz (Augsburg) and a 3-1 decision win over No. 8 seed Demitreus Henry (State College of NY) to advance to Saturday. By virtue of a guaranteed top 8 finish, he has earned AA honors.
Graduate student and No. 1 seed Michael Ross (174 lbs.) was injured eight seconds into his opening round match against LJ Richardson (Coe) and was forced to withdraw from the tournament.
Senior Victor Perlleshi (141 lbs.) fell 4-3 in the opening round to No. 2 seed Jacob Reed (Ohio Northern). He was eliminated in the next round following a 15-10 decision loss to Evan Burge (Wabash).
Sophomore Gabriel Leo-Esparolini (133 lbs.) was defeated 4-2 in the first round by No. 5 seed Dylan Koontz (Dubuque) before suffering a 7-4 loss via decision to No. 4 seed Andrew Perelka (John Carroll).
