Wrestling competes at Princeton Open

PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 4 JWU-Providence wrestling team sent eight student-athletes to compete at the Princeton Open Sunday at Jadwin Gymnasium.

Junior and reigning Division III national Champion at 125 lbs., Joziah Fry (3-1), advanced to the finals with wins over Tommy Link from West Point (15-0), Sheldon Seymour from Lehigh (5-4), and Charles Farmer from West Point. He was defeated by Luke Stanich (Lehigh) in the finals (11-4) to finish second overall.

Classmate Dylan Harr – who finished fourth nationally at 197 lbs. last season – rebound from a 7-4 loss to Hadyn Packer from Rutgers (7-4) to defeat Cole Karpinski from West Point (5-2) and Dontae Hoose from Lehigh (8-2) in the consolation bracket. Harr suffered his second defeat of the day to Luke Stout of Princeton (the #1 seed) (17-2).

Senior Victor Perlleshi (141 lbs.) began his day with a sensational win by fall 3:29 over McKenzie Bell of Rider (D1 National Qualifier). Perlleshi would then pin Joe Davi of Princeton in 2:07 before falling to Ty Linsenbigler (unattached) (10-1).  Next up would be yet another pin this time in :16 seconds over Josh Mason of Bloomsburg. Perlleshi dropped a 20-5 bout to Evan Mougalian of Penn to finish the day going 3-2.

Sophomore Harrison Gordon, meanwhile, bounced back from a 6-2 loss to Joseph Couch from West Point (6-2) to earn a 7-5 win over Kaden Naame from Rider at 125 lbs. His day ended with a loss to Bronson Garber from Bloomsburg (12-7).

Sophomore Jake Eckerle (133 lbs.) knocked off Nain Vazquez from West Point (10-8). He was then defeated by Gable Strickland from Bloomsburg (17-2) and Nick Kayal from Princeton (11-10).

Sophomore Adolfo Betancur (285 lbs.) was defeated by John O'Donnell from Rutgers (3-0) in his first match. Betancur responded with a 7-3 win over Karam Chakif (Lehigh), then medical forfeited out of the tournament.

Junior Patrick Wisniewski (165 lbs.) defeated Tate Nichter 13-5 in his first match. He later suffered losses to Jake Logan (Lehigh) and had to medical forfeit out of the tournament.

Senior Scott Defex (174 lbs.) fell to Gunner Filipowicz (15-6) from West Point and Anthony DeRosa (8-6) from Bloomsburg.
