MUHLENBURG, Pa. – The JWU-Providence wrestling team secured wins over No. 10 Alvernia University (30-13), Messiah University (35-12), and Washington & Lee (32-10) Saturday at the Scott Woods Duals on the campus of Muhlenberg College.
Down four of their 10 weight class starters due to injury, the Wildcats moved several student-athletes up one weight class and were able to produce three victories.
JWU began the day against the Generals and were led by sophomore heavyweight
Adolfo Betancur, who returned to action with a fall victory that sparked a 20-0 run by the Wildcats.
In round two, the Wildcats faced the Falcons, a program they were 1-3 against all-time. Sophomore
Jake Eckerle (133 lbs.) registered an escape point with 30 seconds remaining in his match to secure a 1-0 win with.
The Wildcats were then paired with the Golden Wolves in the third round. Junior and No. 3 ranked
Dylan Harr opened the meet with a loss to No. 5 Isaac Kassis in a match which featured a takedown and an escape from both student-athletes to knot the match at three with :20 seconds remaining.
Betancur followed with a fall in 1:51 to give JWU a 6-3 lead. Sophomore
Harrison Gordon wrestled in place of junior and defending national champion
Joziah Fry at 125 lbs., and came away with a fall to push the lead to 12-3. Eckerle then extended the lead to 18-3 with a fall.
Anticipating a push from Alvernia, Morris inserted Fry at 141 lbs. to face No. 9 Avery Leonard. He ended the first period up 3-0 before Leonard answered with a takedown to grab a 4-3 lead after two periods. Leonard chose to stay on his feet in the third and, with 20 seconds remaining in the match, Leonard found himself in deep on a shot about ready to score the winning takedown. It was then that Fry attempted the Winn Dixie, catching a takedown and backs to end the match with a 10-4 win. JWU won the next two bouts via pin and decision to take a 30-3 lead and secure the win.
