Wrestling wins fifth-consecutive New Standard Invitational

YORK, Pa. – The No. 17-ranked Johnson & Wales (RI) University wrestling team won the New Standard Invitational for the fifth-consecutive year Saturday at M&T Bank Field House on the campus of York (PA) College.

The Wildcats – who entered the match ranked No. 17 nationally – closed the event with 165 points, which was 20 points ahead of second-place TCNJ (145) and third-place Ithaca (144.5).

Freshman Joziah Fry was named Most Outstanding Wrester as he went 4-0 at 125 lbs., finishing ahead of the No. 1 ranked wrester in his weight class in the country. Sophomore Gabriel Leo (141 lbs.) and senior Ryan DeVivo (184 lbs.) each posted identical 4-0 records and placed first in their weight class. Leo's day was highlighted by a 6-4 win over the No. 7 wrestler in the country.

Freshmen Harrison Gordon (133 lbs.) and Adolfo Betancur (285 lbs.) each placed second in their weight class with 3-1 records. Other highlights for head coach Lonnie Morris included four pinfall victories for senior Victor Perlleshi (141 lbs.) and a win by junior Matthew Garcia over the No. 3 ranked wrestler in the country at 149 lbs.
