PROVIDENCE, RI – For the second time in three days, the Johnson & Wales University baseball team won the first game of a GNAC doubleheader in its final at-bat. Johnson & Wales needed four extra innings to take the opener, 4-3, against Anna Maria College. JWU came back to beat the AMCATS, 8-2, in the nightcap.

Johnson & Wales: 14-4, 6-0 GNAC

Statistical Leaders:

Tim Lombardi (JWU): 2-     3, 2 RBI (GM 2)
Adam Twitche (AMC) 2-3, 1 R (GM 2)

Of Note:
It's the first time since 2012 that the Wildcats have started GNAC play with a 6-0 record.

JWU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game one. Joe Maracic – who was named GNAC Player of the Week on Monday – had an RBI single to score Rich Bourdeau then Aidan Hagarty doubled home Anthony Roman.

Anna Maria got all of its runs in the fifth inning thanks to three JWU miscues.

The AMCATS returned the favor in the sixth. An error on Maracic's ground ball allowed Vin Amalfitano to score the tying run.

JWU had the winning run in scoring position during the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but couldn't push it across. The Wildcats stranded 12 runners on base.

A trio of walks in the bottom of the 11th loaded the bases then Steve Rocchio delivered a sacrifice fly to score Maracic.

Senior James Smiegocki came on in relief to get the victory. He threw the final 6.1 innings with nine strikeouts.

The two teams traded runs in the first inning of the second game, including an RBI single by Tim Lombardi. His RBI single in the third started a three-run inning that was aided by a pair of AMCAT errors.

JWU starter Ryan Depatie recorded his first collegiate complete game, giving up two runs, one earned, with six strikeouts.

Up Next:
JWU is back at home on Wednesday to face Wesleyan at 4 pm.
