JWU Baseball Downs RIC 5-4 in Home Opener

Box Score

PROVIDENCE, RI – Errors in the early season can have a multiplying effect. Fortunately for the Johnson & Wales University baseball team, visiting Rhode Island College made more miscues than the Wildcats on Tuesday. The Wildcats won their home opener, 5-4.

Records:
Rhode Island College: 7-3
Johnson & Wales: 7-2

Statistical Leaders:
Colby Greenhalgh (JWU): 2-5, 1 R
Steve Rocchio (JWU): 3-4
Ray Zincone (RIC): 3-4, 2 R

Of Note:
The Anchormen opened the scoring in the top of the fifth when Sam Franco singled home Will Roberge and Ray Zincone.

Johnson & Wales answered with two in its half of the inning. After Colby Greenhalgh singled and Vin Amalfitano reached on a fielder's choice, Tim Lombardi ripped a double to the right field gap to score a pair of runs.

Three RIC miscues allowed the Wildcats to take the lead in the fifth. A wild pitch scored Armani Henderson while errors plated Joe Maracic and Rich Bourdeau.

JWU returned the favor in the seventh. Reliever Dane DellaValle appeared to get out of a bases loaded jam with a double play. Unfortunately, the relay throw to first sailed wide and allowed two runs to score.

The rookie went on to close out the game and pick up his first collegiate save. Junior Tom Doran threw a career-high 6.1 innings with six strikeouts to record the victory.

Up Next:
JWU is back at home Wednesday to face Eastern Connecticut State at 3:30 p.m.
