Johnson & Wales Splits with Lasell

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PROVIDENCE, RI – Miscues helped the Johnson & Wales University baseball team win game one on Sunday against Lasell, then cost the Wildcats in game two. Johnson & Wales won the opener, 4-0, but lost the nightcap 5-1.

Records:
Lasell: 5-15, 4-4 GNAC
Johnston & Wales: 16-11, 5-3 GNAC

Statistical Leaders:
Raimiel Rodriguez (JWU): 3-4, 1 RBI (GM 1); 2-3 (GM 2)
Colby Greenhalgh: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 R (GM 1); 1-2, 1 R (GM 2)
Sean Doris (LC): 2-3 (GM 1); 2-3, 1 R (GM 2)

Of Note:
After failing to score with runners in scoring position in the second, third and fourth innings, JWU got four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Third baseman Joe Maracic drew a one-out walk, stole second and came around to score on a single to right field by Vin Amalfitano.

Lasell appeared to be out of the inning on a Rob Ballinger grounder to shortstop, but a throwing error kept the inning alive. Colby Greenhalgh doubled down the left field line to plate Amalfitano and Ballinger. He would cross the plate himself on Raimiel Rodriguez's double.

That was more than enough run support for JWU starter Rich Marshall. He only surrendered three hits with a career-high nine strikeouts for the first complete game of his career. The Lasers' Dan Petr gave up four runs, but only one earned, in 5.2 innings of work.

Already leading 2-1 in game two, the Lasers broke the game open with three runs in the fifth thanks to a pair of JWU errors. Sean Doris, who led off with a double, scored on a wild pitch. Chris Maringo laid down a squeeze bunt to plate David Marsell then Harrison Silva's single allowed Andre Marchesseault to score.

Going the distance to get the victory for Lasell was Marsell. He gave up one run on five hits with four strikeouts. JWU starter Kyle Cutler surrendered five unearned runs to take the loss.

The Wildcats are on the road Tuesday to take on Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
