Baseball Takes a Pair Off Mass Maritime

PROVIDENCE, RI – Back on the field at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex for the first time this season, the Johnson & Wales University baseball team swept a Sunday doubleheader. The Wildcats defeated Mass Maritime by identical 5-0 scores.

Of Note:
It was a light day for the JWU bullpen as both starting pitchers went the distance. Game one starter Keith Grant only gave up four hits with four strikeouts to get his third victory. The senior has not allowed a run in 22.0 innings of work this season.

In game two, James Smiegocki struck out a career-high nine batters as he threw the second complete game of his career. In his other complete game, he struck out seven at Albertus Magnus on April 23, 2017.

After a run in the second and third inning of game one, JWU broke open the game with three in fourth. Adam Diehl doubled home Aidan Hagarty then scored on a Tim Lombardi sacrifice fly. Diehl was 2 for 3 with a run and RBI.

JWU got a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning of game two. Raimiel Rodriguez scored his second run of the game on a Diehl groundout. In the third, Rodriguez's groundout scored Joe Maracic, who had a pair of hits.
