Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, SC – A five-run eighth inning squashed any hopes the Johnson & Wales University baseball team had of rallying to defeat York College for the second day in a row. The Wildcats dropped an 11-2 decision to the Spartans on Tuesday at the Ripken Experience Complex.
The loss evened the Wildcats' record at 1-1 while York improved to 1-1.
An error in the top of the third inning allowed York to score four runs, two unearned, off JWU starter James Smiegocki.
Three singles and a pair of Spartan miscues allowed the Wildcats to cut the lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning. Adam Diehl and Edison Mercado picked up back-to-back one-out singles. A wild pitch moved Diehl to third then he scored on an Aidan Hagarty single. A passed ball allowed Mercado to get to third and he scored on a Tim Lombardi groundout.
York scored five runs in the eighth that were aided by two walks and a hit batter.
JWU is back on the field Thursday to take on John Jay at 12 p.m.
