BRISTOL, RI – At the NEWA Duals, the Johnson & Wales University wrestling team snapped a seven-match losing streak to Roger Williams. On Friday the Wildcats started their own winning streak as No. 3 JWU beat the seventh-ranked Hawks, 21-12.
The win improved the Wildcats' record to 22-1, setting a school record for victories.
The Wildcats got out to an early lead with Mike Labell's (Stanhope, NJ) 5-4 win at 174 pounds over Taylor Shay. Decisions by #6 Khamri Thomas (Windsor Locks, Conn.) at 197 pounds and No. 9 Bobby Jordan (Nutley, NJ) at 125 pounds tied the match at 9-9.
Fourth-ranked Jay Albis (Fishkill, NY) put JWU ahead for good with his 8-3 decision at 133 pounds. Sophomore Joe Ferinde (Nutley, NJ) gave the Wildcats a six-point cushion by winning 4-3 at 141 pounds. The Wildcats put the match out of reach when Desmond Towns (Morristown, NJ) prevailed 5-2 at 157 pounds and No. 7 Stephen Jarrell (East Greenwich, RI) got a last-second victory to win 9-8 at 165 pounds.
The Wildcats have their final dual meet of the season when they travel to Southern Maine for a 12 p.m. bout.
