FORT WAYNE, Ind.– The No. 6 Johnson & Wales University wrestling team stay undefeated during dual meets with a pair of victories at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Duals. The Wildcats started the day by defeating Concordia (WI), 53-0, then took down #7 Wabash, 24-12.
The two wins upped Johnson & Wales' record to 7-0. JWU moves on to the semifinals where it will take on top-ranked and defending NCAA Champion Wartburg at 11 a.m. on Friday.
Six Wildcats won both of their matches. Junior Bobby Jordan (Nutley, NJ) recorded a 16-1 tech fall at 125 pounds in the first match then opened the Wabash bout with a 9-1 major decision. At 184 pounds, Mike Labell (Stanhope, NJ) pinned Concordia's Mitchell Slatton at the 1:41 mark then recorded a 12-0 major decision against Wartburg.
Junior Jonah Aurelio (Riverside, RI) capped both matches with big wins at 285 pounds. He pinned John Hinson at 5:16 to end the Concordia match, then notched an 8-0 major decision against Wartburg's Sam Hipple. Joe Ferinde (Nutley, NJ) recorded a pin at 141 pounds versus Concordia then bumped up to 149 pounds to beat Griffin Schermer of Wartburg, 4-3.
No. 7 Jay Albis (Fishkill, NY) posted a pin in his 133-pound match against Concordia as did No. 8 Stephen Jarrell (East Greenwich, RI) at 174 pounds. Albis won 5-1 in the second contest while Jarrell prevailed 5-3.
