PROVIDENCE, RI – It was another strong performance for the third-ranked Johnson & Wales University wrestling team on Sunday. The hosts had five wrestlers win their weight class as well as a top-five finish in every weight class at the USC Wildcat Open.
No wrestler dominated the day like fourth-ranked
Jay Albis (Fishkill, NY) at 133 pounds. He had three pins and a tech fall on his way to the finals. He beat David White, 5-4, to win his bracket. No. 6
Stephen Jarrell (East Greenwich, RI) added another tech fall to his NCAA-leading total. He produced a 14-5 major decision against Division I opponent Richard Muniz of Brown in the finals of 165 pounds.
On Saturday, JWU head coach Lonnie Morris reached a coaching milestone with his 300
th win. Sunday it was seventh-ranked
Bobby Jordan's (Woodbridge, NJ). He reached his 100
th collegiate victory on the way to winning the 125-pound bracket with a 7-3 decision over Anthony Calvano from NYU. Jordan's day included a tech fall and a pin.
The fourth title came from sophomore
Khamri Thomas at 197 pounds. The ninth-ranked wrestler in the country had two tech falls before beating Brown's Joshua Durso-Finley, 3-1, in the finals. It was an all-JWU finale at 174 pounds.
Michael Gargano (Old Bridge, NJ) pinned teammate
Adrian Gonzalez (Providence, RI) five minutes into their championship match. Gargano had two tech falls and a major decision on the day.
Senior
Pete Hailer (East Milton, Mass.) had to beat teammate
Michael DiNardo (Mahopac, NY) twice to finish third at 184 pounds. Junior
Jonah Aurelio (Riverside, RI) beat Division II foe Jenard Rosemond from American International to take third at 285 pounds. Aurelio had two pins during the main draw.
Jamiel Stapleton (Malone, NY) had two pins and a tech fall on his way to fourth-place at 149 pounds. Junior
Daniel McBrinn (Ramsey, NJ) took fourth at 157 pounds after two tech falls and a pin.
Joe Ferinde (Nutley, NJ) took fifth at 141 pounds.
JWU is on the road Saturday for a quad meet, hosted by Springfield College.
