WORCESTER, Mass. – The only head coach the Johnson & Wales University wrestling program has known, Lonnie Morris reached a coaching milestone on Saturday. The third-ranked Wildcats defeated WPI, 39-6, then toppled SUNY Brockport, 30-2, to give Morris his 300th coaching victory.
The two victories improved the Wildcats' record to 18-1. Morris is just the 25th NCAA Division III coach to reach the mark and the 72nd overall.
In a rematch of last week's NEWA semifinals, Johnson & Wales lost the first bout to WPI, but won the next five in convincing fashion. Jonah Aurelio (Riverside, RI) produced a pin just 1:20 into his 285-pound match. Fourth-ranked Jay Albis (Fishkill, NY) came through with a 16-1 tech fall at 133 pounds. Sophomore Joe Ferinde (Nutley, NJ) racked up five team points with his 22-7 tech fall.
The Wildcats won the first six matches against SUNY Brockport. Albis produced a 15-4 major decision and Ferinde followed suit with a 9-0 shutout of his own. Also getting a major decision was No. 7 Stephen Jarrell (East Greenwich, RI) at 165 pounds. Earlier against WPI he recorded his NCAA-leading 14th tech fall.
The Wildcats host the USC Open on Sunday, January 29, and have their next dual meet on February 4 when they travel to Castleton for a quad meet with the Spartans, Plymouth State and Springfield.
