Third-Ranked Wildcats Sweep Norwich Quad Meet

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – One night after vanquishing crosstown rival Rhode Island College, the Johnson & Wales University wrestling team went on the road for a quad meet, hosted by Norwich University. The third-ranked Wildcats beat No. 24 Coast Guard, 24-10, then toppled Western New England, 44-4, and finally took down the host Cadets, 38-9.

The Wildcats improved to 12-1 during the dual meet season.

Four Wildcats won all three of their matches. Eighth-ranked Stephen Jarrell (East Greenwich, RI) posted a trio of tech fall victories, including the WNE bout when he bumped up to 184 pounds. At 125 pounds, No. 7 Bobby Jordan (Nutley, NJ) had a decision, tech fall and forfeit for his three wins.

Jonah Aurelio (Riverside, RI) at 285 pounds had a pin, major decision and decision in his three triumphs. DJ Tirelli (Oradell, NJ) was the only Wildcat to post a pair of pins to go along with a decision as part of his 3-0 day

Senior Mike Labell (Stanhope, NJ) only wrestled twice, but he made the most of his opportunities. He recorded a tech fall against Coast Guard then added a pin at 197 pounds in the Norwich contest.

The toughest match of the day was the opener against Coast Guard. The Wildcats found themselves down 10-0 after the first three matches. Jarrell and Labell recorded back-to-back tech falls to tie the match. JWU took the lead when Khamri Thomas (Windsor Locks, Conn.) won 10-8 in sudden victory against Phil Azzari at 197 pounds.

JWU returns home on Sunday, January 22 to host the NEWA Headlock for Hunger Duals.
