East Providence, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales
University baseball team dropped a 6-5 decision against Curry in a
non-conference contest at Pierce Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Curry took the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI
single by senior Tim Sweeney (Walpole, Mass.). JWU
would respond in the bottom of the first when senior
Jonathan Melendez (Providence, R.I.) led off with
a double and later scored on a groundout by junior Nick Alosco
(Mahopac, N.Y.). The visiting Colonels took the 2-1 lead
in the top of the third on an RBI single by Sweeny, scoring senior
Jesse Bruinsma (Lynnfield, Mass.) who led off the
inning with a double. The Colonels added to their lead later in the
inning after an RBI single by junior Brad Hawn (Chino
Hills, Calif.) put the squad up 4-1. JWU chipped away at
the lead in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI groundout from senior
Waldis Garcia
(Lowell, Mass.), making the score 4-2. The Wildcats then
knotted the game at 4-4 on a two run single by junior Mike
Murphy (Pawtucket, R.I.). JWU then took their first
lead of the game after an RBI single by Melendez put the squad up
5-4. The visiting Colonels regained the lead in the top of the
seventh on a two run single by senior Rick Vail (Lynnfield,
Mass.), going up 6-5. That would be all the scoring for
the afternoon as Curry held on for the 6-5 victory.
Sweeney was 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI in the win for
Curry, Bruinsma and sophomore David Stevens (Deerfield
Beach, Fla.) each notched a pair of hits for the Colonels.
Junior Brian Pipines (Cresskill, N.J.) picked up
the win on the mound for Curry, pitching three and a third innings
of scoreless relief with three strikeouts.
Melendez was 2-for-5 with one run and an RBI while junior
Bryan Sayers
(Chelmsford, Mass.) notched a pair of hits in the setback
for JWU. Sophomore Alex MacKay
(Sanford, Maine) suffered the loss for the Wildcats,
allowing three runs on four hits in three and a third innings of
work.
With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 4-21 while Curry improves
to 13-7 on the season. The Wildcats will return to action on
Wednesday, April 7th when they travel to Bridgewater State for a
non-conference contest at 3:30 p.m.
