Box Score Standish, Maine – The No. 3 seeded Johnson &
Wales University baseball team fell to No. 2 seed St. Joseph's of
Maine, 11-1 in the final four of the 2010 Great Northeast Athletic
Conference Baseball Championship at Larry Mahaney Field on Thursday
afternoon.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, St. Joseph's exploded for
five runs in the second en route to the 7-0 lead. After an RBI
single by Todd Keneborus put the Monks up 8-0, Johnson & Wales
got on the board in the top of the fifth. Senior Waldis Garcia
(Lowell, Mass.) hit a triple and later scored on an RBI
single by junior Mike Murphy
(Pawtucket, R.I.). That would be all the scoring for the
Wildcats, however as the game was stopped in the bottom of the
seventh due to the ten-run rule.
Murphy was 3-for-3 with an RBI for Johnson & Wales while
Garcia went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Wildcats in the
setback.
Keneborus was 2-for-3 with three RBI for St. Joseph's while Mike
Burdin went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI for the Monks. Pat
Moran notched the complete game victory, allowing one run on seven
hits with nine strikeouts.
With the loss JWU is now 14-27 while St. Joseph's improves to
29-10 for the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday,
May 1st when they take on Emerson in an elimination game at Pierce
Field in East Providence, R.I., at 10:00 a.m. St. Joseph's will
take on No. 1 seed Suffolk at 1:00 p.m. with the loser of that
contest taking on the winner of JWU vs. Emerson in an elimination
game at 4:00 p.m. The GNAC Championship will take place on Sunday,
May 2nd at 12:00 p.m.
