Box Score Newport, R.I. -- The Johnson & Wales University
baseball team fell to Salve Regina, 7-6 in a non-conference contest
on the road on Friday afternoon.
Johnson & Wales got on the board early when an RBI single by
junior Teddy Katz
(Pittsburgh, Pa.) plated fellow junior Mike Murphy
(Pawtucket, R.I.) in the top of the first. Salve responded
in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Michael O'Neill. The
Seahawks extended their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth. JWU
responded with four runs in the top of the sixth, including an RBI
single by junior Nick Simon
(Rumford, R.I.) and a pair of RBI groundouts by junior
Bryan Sayers
(Chelmsford, Mass.) and senior Michael
Sarfati (North Plainfield, N.J.) to take the 5-4
advantage. Salve Regina knotted the game at 5-5 in the bottom of
the eighth on a sacrifice fly by O'Neill.
The game headed into extra innings after a scoreless ninth before
the Wildcats took the 6-5 lead on an RBI double by junior
Nick Alosco
(Mahopac, N.Y.) in the top of the 10th. Salve Regina
answered in the bottom of the 10th when an RBI single by Tom Glynn
tied the game at 6-6 before Brendan Tapley ended things with a
single to left, scoring Brandon Bursie to take the 7-6 victory.
O'Neill was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI while Glynn went 2-for-2
with two RBI in the win for Salve Regina. Alsoco was 2-for-5 with a
run and an RBI while Katz and junior Matt Yaeger
(Glendale, Ariz.) each had two hits in the setback for
JWU.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 13-26 while Salve
Regina improves to 20-15 for the season. The Wildcats will return
to action on Tuesday, April 27th when they host the first round of
the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship.
