Nashua, N.H -- The Johnson & Wales University
baseball team swept a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double
header against Rivier on the road on Saturday afternoon at Holman
Stadium. JWU posted an 18-2 win in the opener and completed the
sweep with a 19-0 shutout victory in the nightcap.
The Wildcats were led by senior Jonathan Melenez
(Providence, R.I.) who had five hits, four RBIs, and
scored six runs on the afternoon. Junior Mike Murphy
(Pawtucket, R.I.) and junior Nick Alosco
(Mahopac, N.Y.) also had with five hits on the day for the
Wildcats.
In the opener, the Wildcats would get all the offense they would
need in the top of the first with three runs, including a two run
single by junior Matt Yaegar (Glendale, Ariz.) to
go ahead 3-0. JWU added five runs with a two run triple by Melendez
en route to the 18-2 victory. Melendez was 3-for-6 with three runs
and four RBI while Murphy and sophomore Joe Coppola
(Ridgewood, N.J.) each notched four hits for the Wildcats.

Tsangarides (Hinsdale, Mass.) got his first win of the
2010 season allowing just one run on two hits with 11 strikeouts in
six innings.
The nightcap was more of the same as the Wildcats jumped out to
the early 6-0 lead after Alosco and freshman Tyler Newell
(Westerly, N.Y.) each belted home runs in the second
inning. The squad then cruised to the 19-0 victory. Senior
Waldis Garcia
(Lowell, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with three runs and five RBI
in the win for the Wildcats. Senior Jeff Jordan
(Woodbridge, N.J.) recorded the victory for JWU, pitching
the complete game shutout, allowing just four hits with seven
strike outs in seven innings of work.
With the two wins Johnson & Wales is now 7-22 and 4-4 in the
GNAC while Rivier falls to 2-15 overall, 1-7 in league play. The
Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, April 11th when they host
Albertus Magnus for a GNAC double header at 12:00 p.m.
