East Providence, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales
University baseball team dropped a pair of decisions against
Suffolk in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference double header at
Pierce Field on Saturday afternoon. Suffolk posted a 2-0 win in the
opener before completing the sweep with a 4-3 victory in the
nightcap.
In the opener, Suffolk got the only run they would need in the
bottom of the third on an RBI triple by senior Bobby
Barrett (Milton, Mass.). The visiting Rams added a run in
the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single by junior Eric
Del Buono (Westfield, Mass. ) en route to the 2-0 victory.
Suffolk's junior Alex Torres (Framingham,
Mass.) picked up the win for Suffolk, allowing just one
hit with four strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Johnson & Wales jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the top of
the first after a two run double by sophomore Zach Boyes
(West Warwwick, R.I.). The visiting Rams knotted the game
at 2-2 on an RBI single by junior Andrew Babb (Hopkinton,
Mass.) and capitalized on a JWU miscue to take the 3-2
lead in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, an RBI
single by senior Rich Fonseca (East Providence,
R.I.) knotted the game at 3-3. Suffolk responded in the
bottom of the seventh when Barrett led off with a single and later
scored on an RBI single by Del Buono to take the 4-3 victory.
Barrett was 2-for-3 with two runs for Suffolk while freshman
Jhonneris Mendez (Roslindale, Mass.) picked up the
win for the Rams, pitching one and a third innings of scoreless
relief with two strikeouts for the victory.
With the losses JWU is now 2-15 for the season and 0-2 in the GNAC
while Suffolk improves to 6-7 for the year, 2-0 in league play. The
Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, March 28th when they host
Norwich in a GNAC twin bill, starting at 1:00 p.m.
