New London, Conn. – The Johnson & Wales
baseball team dropped a 12-3 decision against Coast Guard in a
non-conference contest on the road on Wednesday afternoon.
Johnson & Wales took the early 2-0 lead in the top of the
second after an RBI single by junior Bryan Sayers
(Hinsdale, Mass.) and an unearned run gave the Wildcats
the two run lead. After Coast Guard cut the lead to 2-1 in the
bottom of the second, JWU regained the two run advantage on an RBI
groundout by junior Nick Alosco (Mahopac, N.Y.),
plating fellow junior Waldis Garcia (Lowell,
Mass.) to make the score 3-1.
Coast Guard tied the game on an RBI single by senior Ryan Milligan
in the third and the Bears took the lead with a pair of runs in the
fifth on an RBI single by Carroll and an RBI single by freshman
Nolan Gallagher for a 5-3 advantage.
Milligan highlighted a four-run sixth with a three-run homer to
left as the Bears took a 9-3 lead en route to the 12-3 victory.
Senior Jon Melendez (Providence, R.I.) and Sayers
each had two hits for Johnson and Wales. Junior Jason Tsangarides (Hinsdale, Mass.) went five and a third
innings in the setback for the Wildcats, recording 10
strikeouts.
Freshman Tyler Babkiewich was 5-for-5 with four runs scored while
fellow rookie Cameron Carroll had two hits and drove in five runs
in the win for Coast Guard. Freshman Nate Toll worked eight innings
and allowed just five hits, three runs, two earned, while walking
one and striking out five for the Bears.
JWU is now 0-10 for the season while Coast Guard improves to 4-4
for the year. The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, March
18th when they host WPI for a non-conference contest at 3:30
p.m.
