Alumni Spotlight - Sam Sears '18

Degree:  Bachelor's in Culinary Nutrition- Clinical Dietetics

Graduation Year: 2018

Current Occupation: Dietetic Intern- University of Alabama Athletics

Job Responsibilities: During the football season I travel with the team. I work with the defense on the sidelines during the game, focusing on their hydration status and energy levels and provide proper fueling as needed. As the season goes on, the athletes' bodies are breaking down more and more every day so increasing the importance of nutrition, especially as the post-season approaches, is crucial for success. For a home or away game, each staff member goes above and beyond to fuel the players to help them win.

Every day is different in athletics. From cooking a nutritionally balanced breakfast, lunch and dinner for the student-athletes to making post-practice recovery shakes for the football team, the athletes are constantly fueling their bodies. The nutrition staff is there to assess body composition and help the athletes form eating habits that will benefit their athletic performance. I also do cooking demos for athletes to teach them not only how to cook, but what nutrients are important to them as athletes.

Notable Experiences:

  • Appearance on ESPN's "Training Days: Rolling with the Tide" in 2018
  • 2018 SEC Champions
  • 2018 Orange Bowl Champions
  • 2019 Citrus Bowl Champions

How did JWU help prepare you for your current position?: The competitive edge that I developed from being a part of the lacrosse team, as well as my culinary classes, and nutrition classes have pushed me to excel in the high-intensity atmosphere at the University of Alabama. I joined the lacrosse team on their second year in the NCAA and we had our fair share of roadblocks that we overcame by our senior year. There is no doubt that the teamwork and leadership skills that I gained from those four years have benefited me in my career.

Favorite JWU memory(ies):

  • Plowing endless feet of snow off the turf with the benches.
  • Coming back from a 10-3 deficit at Norwich to win 14-13 in OT and the celly in the snowbank.
  • Hearing Mom (Jillian) roast every one that stepped foot in the training room, especially coach.
  • Winning the GNAC as a sixth seed our senior year

Advice for Current Student-Athletes: Don't take a single second at JWU for granted. You'll meet some of your best friends and make some of your favorite memories. It is almost impossible to emulate the competition that we experience at JWU competing for championships, so as cliché as it sounds, play every game like it's your last. I would do anything to suit up one more time with the boys and dance in the locker room to Love On Top after a win!
