Johnson & Wales Falls to Curry, 5-4 In ECAC Northeast Championship

Milton, Mass. – The Johnson & Wales University hockey squad dropped a 5-4 decision against Curry in the finals of the 2010 ECAC Northeast Tournament Championship at the Max Ulin Rink on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson & Wales took a quick lead when a goal from freshman forward Ryan Kelly (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) put the squad up 1-0. The Wildcats extended their lead to 2-0 at the 3:06 mark of the first on a goal from sophomore defenseman Domenic Recchia (Sterling Heights, Mich.). JWU took the two goal lead into the locker room after the first period of play.

Curry cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal by junior Ryan Warsofsky (Marshfield, Mass.) just :49 into the second period. The host Colonels then knotted the game at 2-2 when senior Ross Enmark (Shelby Township, Mich.) scored at the 1:04 mark. Just over one minute later, the Wildcats regained the lead as senior Craig Houle (Burrillville, R.I.) found the back of the net to make the score 3-2. The Colonels then tallied three goals over the next six minutes, provided by sophomores John Williams (Flourtown, Pa.), Ryan Barlock (Niles, Ill.) and Payden Benning. The hosts out shot Johnson & Wales 33-7 in the second periodand took a 5-3 advantage into the second intermission.

Johnson & Wales would cut the lead to 5-4 on a power-play goal by freshman defenseman Trevor Jewell (Belgrade, Mont.) at the 8:45 mark. That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as Curry held on for the 5-4 victory.

Senior Steven Jakiel (Santa Clarita, Calif.) made 30 saves in the win for Curry while freshman Matt Cooper (Perrysburg, Ohio) made 52 saves for Johnson & Wales in the setback.

With the loss JWU wraps up the 2009-10 campaign with a 12-15-1 record while Curry earnes the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship with a 19-8- mark.
