Wildcats leave North Carolina with 14-5 win over Pacers

CARY, N.C. – The JWU (Providence) baseball team split its non-conference doubleheader with William Peace University on Friday, dropping game one before taking the nightcap at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.

Game One: Pacers 6, Wildcats 2
Senior Jack Obert brought in sophomore Jeremy Auren and freshman Sam Schoenberg in the third to give JWU an early 2-0 lead. The Pacers went in front 5-2 with three runs in the fifth off redshirt junior Max Randazzo, who allowed eight hits and five runs (four earned) with two walks and five punchouts in five innings of work.

Game Two: Wildcats 14, Pacers 5
Freshman Dimitri Staphos laced a two-run single and finished with three RBI while classmate Justin Hernandez smacked a solo home run and drove in three. JWU capitalized on a pair of William Peace errors to build a 5-3 lead after four before striking for two in the fifth and six in the sixth to blow the game open.

Schoenberg launched a sac fly in the fifth, and a two-run single off the bat of junior Diego Taveras in the sixth stretched the lead to 11-5. Schoenberg and Ducey also collected an RBI in the sixth before Hernandez capped the scoring with his second long ball of the season in the seventh. Senior Brett Nickerson worked the first four innings and surrendered six hits and three runs over four to earn the win.
