PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior
Jack Obert slammed a pair of first-inning home runs and sophomore
Yedan Diaz went 4-for-5 with five RBI to send the JWU (Providence) baseball team to a 12-5 win over Roger Williams University Wednesday afternoon in Conference of New England (CNE) action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Diaz finished the afternoon 4-for-5 with a two-run, first-inning blast while Obert launched both a three-run shot and a solo home run in a 10-run first for the Wildcats (5-9, 1-0 CNE), who pounded out 13 hits against their in-state rival. Obert – who was named CNE Player of the Week on March 16 – closed the afternoon with three hits and two runs scored.
Diaz opened the scoring with a two-run jack, followed by a solo shot off the bat of Obert. Sophomore
Jeremy Auren then plated two with a single up the middle that made it 5-0 before a two-run single from Diaz and Obert's three-run home run gave JWU a double-digit lead after one (10-0).
Redshirt freshman
Justin Hernandez added a solo shot in the fourth and Diaz drove in his fifth run of the day with a single in the seventh. Junior
Dylan Young allowed seven hits and three runs (two earned) with four walks and five strikeouts to move to 1-2 on the season. He walked three in the first but worked his way out of the jam unscathed, which set the stage for the Wildcats to blow the doors off the Hawks in the bottom half of the frame.
