Baseball loses two one-run games in South Carolina

LEXINGTON, S.C. – The JWU (Providence) baseball team was defeated by Marietta and No. 20 Case Western Reserve Friday afternoon in non-conference action at Lexington County Baseball Stadium.

Pioneers 9, Wildcats 8
Senior Jack Obert socked a two-run home run in the first and added a two-run single in the second to stake the Wildcats to a 4-0 lead. A two-run double off the bat of junior Jack Dwyer sparked a three-run fifth and pushed the lead to 7-2. The Pioneers answered with two in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull even at seven. Later, with the game tied at eight in the ninth, a throwing error allowed the go-ahead run to score for Marietta. Junior Diego Taveras finished with two hits and two RBI and redshirt junior Max Randazzo punched out 10 in six innings of work for JWU.

Spartans 4, Wildcats 3
Obert went yard again, this time launching a two-run shot in the ninth. Sophomore Corey Magill also drove in a run with a double in the second to give JWU an early 1-0 lead before the Spartans put up a '3' spot in the seventh and tacked on what proved to be the game-winning run in the seventh. Senior Brett Nickerson held the nationally-ranked Spartans to three runs on 11 hits in six innings of work, walking one and striking out a pair.
