PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The JWU (Providence) National Championship wrestling program saw a total of 29 student-athletes honored by the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) on Tuesday.
Senior
Joziah Fry (125 lbs.) was named both NEWA Wrestler of the Year and Most Dominant Wrestler of the Year. Freshman
Peyton Ellis (133 lbs.) was named NEWA Rookie of the Year while head coach
Lonnie Morris was named NEWA Coach of the Year and JWU received the Coaching Staff of the Year Award.
Fry was joined by graduate student
Dylan Harr, senior
Hayden Brown, and juniors
Jake Eckerle and
Adolfo Betancur on the First Team. Ellis and sophomore
Jack Richardson were named to the Second Team while graduate student
Devin Rivet and junior
Ky'ell Roper were added to the Honorable Mention squad. Ellis, along with classmate
Zach Miller and
Kiaben Kennedy, garnered a spot on the All-Rookie Team.
Fry won his third-straight national championship at 125 lbs. in 2024-25 and finished the season with a 43-0 record. Ellis – who was named NEWA Rookie of the Week twice during his rookie campaign – took second at the NCAA Northeast Regionals and went 2-2 at the national tournament.
Brown returned from a yearlong absence to capture a national championship at 149 lbs. and his third All-America honor. He closed his season with a 41-1 record.
Harr placed fifth at the NCAA Championship for the second-consecutive season and was received the award for most pins at the national tournament. He graduates with three All-America honors. Betancur, meanwhile, finished sixth in the country to capture his first All-America honor.
Eckerle won the NCAA Northeast Regional (141 lbs.) and wrapped his junior season with a 22-5 record. Richardson took second at the regionals and posted a 2-2 record at the NCAA Championships, finishing with a 30-7 record this past season.
Roper just missed qualifying for nationals as he placed fourth at the regionals in Worcester, Massachusetts. He finished the season with a 26-16 record. Rivet – who attended nearby Bishop Hendricken High School – went 3-2 at the regional to place fifth.
Miller captured first place at the NEWA Futures in February and notched a 16-10 record while Kennedy took second at the Scott Viera Open on December 14 in Bristol, R.I.
