NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championship Preview

Wildcats seeking first national championship

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Seniors Joziah Fry and Hayden Brown highlight the list of seven Johnson & Wales University student-athletes who will compete at the 2025 NCAA Division III Wrestling National Championship on March 14-15, 2025 at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence, Rhode Island.

A two-time national champion at 125 lbs. (2023-24), Fry (Coventry, R.I.) enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed with a 38-0 record after winning his third-straight NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on March 2 at Wesleyan (CT) University. He has received a bye and will match up with Kaden Majcher (Lycoming) – who owns a record of 32-4 – on Friday morning.

Brown, meanwhile, boasts a 36-1 record and picked up his fourth regional championship less than two weeks ago. The Exeter, New Hampshire native draws Chase Fiser (20-6) of Loras in the opening round. Two years ago, Brown placed third at the national championships.

Freshman and No. 2 seed Peyton Ellis (133 lbs.) owns a 28-2 record and placed second to Chase Randall of Coast Guard at the regionals. A native of Coventry, R.I., Ellis takes on Jacob Venezia (22-9) of NYU in the first round.

Junior Jake Eckerle (Northport, N.Y.) will be the No. 7 seed in the 141 lb. bracket and will meet Dylan Phelps (29-7) of Olivet after receiving a bye. Eckerle won his first regional championship this past season and owns a 19-3 record thus far in 2024-25.

A native of Mohnton, Pennsylvania, the No. 7-seeded Harr rejoined the program in January and carries a 16-3 record into the tournament. He tallied his 100th career win in the finals of the regionals and squares up with No. 6 seed Joseph Petrella (23-2) of Baldwin-Wallace on Friday morning.

After a fourth-place finish at regionals as a freshman last year, sophomore Jack Richardson is debuting at nationals after placing second at regionals earlier this month. The Danielson, Connecticut native is 28-5 this season and draws Carson Martinson (Central) and his 15-3 record in the opening round.

Junior Adolfo Betancur is making his second appearance at the national tournament following a third-place finish at the regionals. The Johnston, Rhode Island native is 23-6 this season and will take on Cam.ron Harper (Augsburg) and his 31-11 record.

Below is a complete schedule of events for the tournament. The championships culminates with the crowning of both individual national champions and a team national champion on Saturday night:
  • Session 1: Friday, March 14 – 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
    • Preliminary rounds one and two / consolation first round
  • Session 2: Friday, March 14 – 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
    • Championship quarterfinals / consolation second and third rounds
  • Session 3: Saturday, March 15 – 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
    • Championship semifinals / consolation quarterfinals and semifinals / consolation matches for third, fifth and seventh place
  • Session 4: Saturday, March 15 – 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
    • Finals (all weight classes) & awards presentation
Last season, the Wildcats placed fourth at the NCAA Tournament and saw five student-athletes named All-American, including Fry and Harr.
