Baseball thumps Rivier on Senior Day, 12-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The JWU (Providence) baseball team cruised to an 12-2 win over Rivier University Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Senior Day at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

The Wildcats (20-11, 11-2 GNAC) struck for three in the first to grab an early lead. Junior Jack Obert led off with a double and redshirt junior Ryan Ducey traded places with him to account for the game's first run. After Ducey scored on a wild pitch, senior Zachary Amero brought in senior Owen Davis with a single to right.

In the third, Davis laced a one-out double and scored on a sac fly off the bat of classmate Nicolas Fortes to push the lead to 4-0. A two-run single from Ducey and a bases-loaded double off the bat of Davis highlighted a seven-run seventh and extended the lead to 11-0. Leading by nine in the seventh, senior Trevor Juan drew a one-out walk, went to third on a double by Davis, and scored on a ground ball off the bat of senior Xavier Botelho to end the game.

Junior Brett Nickerson scattered four hits and punched out seven over six shutout innings to improve to 5-2 on the season. Senior Ryan Schultz fanned three in the seventh. Davis, meanwhile, went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Ducey had two hits and drove in three and Amero notched two hits. Senior Alex Coutcher singled in his first career at-bat in the sixth.

Prior to the start of the contest, the Wildcats honored seniors Davis, Ducey, Amero, Schultz, Fortes, Botelho, Coutcher, Juan, Ryan St. Jean, Ben Fosberg, Nick Calenda, Aidan Vining, Garrett Fusco, and Justin Markell for their contributions to the program.
