PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The JWU (Providence) baseball team cruised to an 12-2 win over Rivier University Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Senior Day at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
The Wildcats (20-11, 11-2 GNAC) struck for three in the first to grab an early lead. Junior
Jack Obert led off with a double and redshirt junior
Ryan Ducey traded places with him to account for the game's first run. After Ducey scored on a wild pitch, senior
Zachary Amero brought in senior
Owen Davis with a single to right.
In the third, Davis laced a one-out double and scored on a sac fly off the bat of classmate
Nicolas Fortes to push the lead to 4-0. A two-run single from Ducey and a bases-loaded double off the bat of Davis highlighted a seven-run seventh and extended the lead to 11-0. Leading by nine in the seventh, senior
Trevor Juan drew a one-out walk, went to third on a double by Davis, and scored on a ground ball off the bat of senior
Xavier Botelho to end the game.
Junior
Brett Nickerson scattered four hits and punched out seven over six shutout innings to improve to 5-2 on the season. Senior
Ryan Schultz fanned three in the seventh. Davis, meanwhile, went 3-for-4 with three runs scored while Ducey had two hits and drove in three and Amero notched two hits. Senior
Alex Coutcher singled in his first career at-bat in the sixth.
