Wildcats, Mariners split meeting of top two teams in GNAC

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Redshirt junior Aidan Vining struck out a season-high 15 batters in a 6-3 win over Mitchell College in the opener of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball doubleheader for the JWU (Providence) baseball team Friday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Mariners rallied back to win the nightcap, 18-1.

Game One: Wildcats 6, Mariners 3
Vining allowed nine hits and three runs with just one walk in his fourth complete game of the season. In the process, he became the program's all-time strikeout leader as his 15 punchouts pushed him past Dan Howard (2002-05) and into first-place with 273. Senior Owen Davis sparked a three-run fifth with a two-run singe to give the Wildcats a 4-0 lead. In the eighth, classmate Xavier Botelho laced an RBI single to make it 5-3 before senior Trevor Juan plated another in the ninth to cap the scoring. Each of the top seven batters for head coach Kevin Casey recorded at least one hit.

Game Two: Mariners 18, Wildcats 1 (7 inn.)
Juan had two of the Wildcats five hits as the Mariners drew three-consecutive bases-loaded walks in what became a nine-run fourth inning. Senior starter Justin Markell took the loss as he allowed two hits and three runs with two walks in one inning of work.
