PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior
Gus Lappin went 3-for-5 with three RBI – including a walk-off single in the ninth – as the JWU (Providence) baseball team rallied from a 6-1 deficit to eliminate Lasell University from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament with a 7-6 win Saturday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Junior
Owen Davis picked up a pair of hits and drove in two for the No. 2 seeded Wildcats (24-11), who advance to face the winner of No. 6 USJ / No. 7 Norwich later this evening in an elimination game. The No. 3 seed Lasers (21-20) – who held a four-run lead into the sixth inning – closed their season with nine-consecutive losses.
Junior
Xavier Botelho sparked the rally with an RBI single in the sixth to make it 6-2. Lappin followed with a two-run double to bring JWU to within a pair before Davis' two-run double in the seventh tied the game at six.
After failing to score with the bases-loaded in eighth, Davis and sophomore
Jack Obert singled in the ninth to bring up Lappin with two down. The South Portland, Maine native drove the first pitch into right-center field to bring in Davis and keep the Wildcats season alive.
Freshman
Dylan Young tossed three innings of scoreless relief to earn his second win of the season. He held the Lasers to just one hit and struck out three.
