Schultz career night lifts Wildcats past Blue Jays, 14-4

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Ryan Schultz struck out a career-high 11 batters to propel the JWU (Providence) baseball team to a 14-4 win over The University of Saint Joseph (CT) Saturday night in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

The No. 2 seed Wildcats (25-11) advance to meet No. 7 seed Norwich, who defeated the Blue Jays 9-1 earlier in the day to advance. The Cadets need one win to advance to the GNAC Championship while the Wildcats will need two wins over their rivals from Northfield, Vermont to advance.

Senior Riley Hasson went 5-for-5 with a two-run home run and a pair of run-scoring singles while classmate Zachary Amero laced a two-run single in the seventh and junior Xavier Botelho went 2-for-6 with an RBI single and two runs scored.

JWU scored three in the sixth and five in the seventh to blow the game open and grab a 10-2 lead. Hasson's sixth round tripper of the season – a three-run shot to center – gave the Wildcats a 5-2 lead. In the seventh, Amaro's run-scoring singles, combined with an RBI single off the bat of junior Owen Davis and two unearned runs, extended the cushion to eight.

The Wildcats pushed across four more runs in the ninth on RBI singles from Hasson, Botelho, and juniors Nicolas Fortes and Trevor Juan to make it a 14-2 lead. Schultz, meanwhile, scattered nine hits and surrendered four runs to go with two walks and those 11 punchouts.
