Norwich edges Wildcats in GNAC playoff opener, 7-6

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The JWU (Providence) baseball team was defeated by Norwich University 7-6 in the first round of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Friday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

The loss sends the No. 2 seed Wildcats (23-11) into the loser's bracket, where they will meet the loser of No. 3 Lasell / No. 6 University of Saint Joseph Saturday morning at 11 a.m. Sophomore Jack Obert went 3-for-4 while seniors Riley Hasson and EJ Leone, along with junior Xavier Botelho, each collected two hits for JWU, which was hurt by three errors.

In a game which featured six lead changes, the Wildcats scored twice in the first on a sac fly from junior Owen Davis and an RBI single from Obert. Junior Nicolas Fortes run-scoring single in the third, followed by a wild pitch, allowed the Wildcats to regain a 4-3 lead after three innings.

Leone brought in Hasson with a single in the fifth to even the score at five and, in the seventh, Davis scored on a fielding error to knot the score at seven. The Cadets (13-22) – who committed five errors of their own – scored the eventual winning run in the eighth on a single by Jon Ringer.

Sophomore Aidan Vining allowed 10 hits and six runs (five earned) to go with two walks and four strikeouts in seven innings of work for the Wildcats. Juniors Ben Fosberg and Ryan Schultz combined to surrender three hits and one run over the final two innings; Fosberg was saddled with the loss.
