Wildcats pile up 27 runs in win over NEC

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Xavier Botelho with 3-for-5 and drove in five RBI as the JWU (Providence) baseball team ran its win steak to six with a 27-4 win over New England College Sunday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

Botelho registered a pair of RBI singles in a 14-run first inning for the Wildcats, who scored their most runs in a game since a 27-13 triumph over Anna Maria in the GNAC Tournament on March 2, 2018. He later added a two-run single in the second and plated another on a ground out in the fifth as JWU ran its win streak to six and improved to 9-1 in conference play.

Senior Riley Hasson (3-for-4) and sophomore Jack Obert (2-for-2) both recorded four RBI while junior Zachary Amero laced a two-run double in the first and closed the day with three RBI. Obert, meanwhile, smacked a two-run triple and a two-run single in the first, and senior EJ Leone notched a pair of run-scoring doubles in the first and third innings, respectively.

Eight of the nine starters in the Wildcats lineup reached safely; the only one not to record a hit, junior Nicholas Fortes, drew three walks and was one of six student-athletes to score at least three times, led by classmate Trevor Juan, who crossed home plate on four occasions. All told, the Wildcats scored 27 runs on 15 hits.

Junior Justin Markell struck out six in 2.2 innings of scoreless relief to record his second win of the season.
