SALISBURY, Md. – Sophomore
Owen Davis belted a three-run home run and drove in four to propel the JWU (Providence) baseball team to a 9-8 win over No. 12 Rowan University Friday afternoon in the season-opener for both programs at Salisbury University.
Senior
Riley Hasson added two hits and plated three for the Wildcats, who also received RBI doubles form senior
Jack Magane and junior
Nicolas Fortes. JWU – which rallied for five runs in the seventh to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 9-4 lead – pounded out 12 hits on the afternoon, led by four from juniors
Trevor Juan and
Xavier Botelho.
The Wildcats threw up a '4' spot in the opening frame behind an RBI single from Hasson and a three-run jack from Davis. The Owls responded with one in the second, two in the third, and three in the sixth to open up a one-run lead going to the seventh, where Magane tied the game at five with an RBI double.
Later in the inning, Hasson brought home two with a single up the middle to make it 7-5 before Davis plated one on a fielder's choice and Fortes ripped a ground-rule double to extend the Wildcats lead to 9-5. The Owls got three back in the ninth to make it a one-run game at 9-8, however junior
Ryan Schultz came on to record the final three outs and preserve the win.
Sophomore starter
Aidan Vining allowed eight hits and five runs over six innings to earn the win for JWU. The preseason All-America selection did not walk a batter and fanned four. Junior
Garrett Fusco worked two-plus innings in relief of Vining and struck out two before turning game over to Schultz.
