PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales (RI) University baseball team racked up 30 runs and 27 hits in sweeping a doubleheader from Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Norwich University Friday afternoon at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Game One: Wildcats 18, Cadets 1
Sophomore Owen Davis smacked a three-run home run in the second and finished with five RBI, and the Wildcats rolled to a game one win. Junior Riley Hasson recorded three run-scoring singles and also scored twice while senior Miles Kelly and junior Thorin Sanchez-Guerra each drove in two for JWU, which saw all nine starters collect at least one hit. The Wildcats struck for four runs in the first and second innings, and three in both the third and fourth, to build a commanding 12-0 lead after four turns at-bat. Freshman Aidan Vining was dominant on the mound in registering his third win of the season for the Wildcats, allowing just one run on two hits while fanning 11.
Game Two: Wildcats 12, Cadets 3
Kelly homered and was one of three Wildcats to record two RBI, along with sophomore Xavier Botelho and freshman Jack Obert. JWU trailed 3-1 after one but put up a '5' spot in the fourth, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Botelho, to grab a 5-3 lead. Three bases-loaded walks in the fifth extended the lead to 8-3 before Hasson was hit with the sacks juiced to make it 9-3. Sophomore Ryan Schultz struck out seven in six innings of work to improve to 2-0 on the season for head coach Kevin Casey.
