PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Five student-athletes combined to throw a one-hitter as the Johnson & Wales (RI) University baseball team blanked Babson College 9-0 Monday afternoon in non-conference action at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.
Sophomores Garrett Fusco, Justin Markell, and Nick Calenda, along with freshmen Elijah Barber and Ben Fosberg, combined to shut down the Beavers offense and move to 20-13 on the season. JWU overcame nine walks by its starting pitchers by turning three double plays and striking out five, including two by Fusco. Markell was credited with the win in relief, allowing one hit and two walks to go with one strikeout in relief of the starter Fusco.
Offensively, the Wildcats manufactured the only run they would need in the second on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Owen Davis. JWU tacked on two in the third on a sac fly from junior and reigning Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week Riley Hasson, and an RBI single from junior Xavier Botelho.
The Wildcats doubled their lead in the sixth when Kelley smacked a two-run home run to right and Botelho laced an RBI double, making it 6-0. They tacked on a single run in the seventh and a pair of unearned runs in the eighth. Hasson and Botelho each finished the afternoon with three hits and two RBI while Kelly was 2-for-4 w2ith two RBI and three runs scored.
