MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Freshman Aidan Vining struck out eight over nine innings of work in Johnson & Wales (RI) University's 4-3 win over Catholic University Friday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Crossley Field.
The Woburn, Massachusetts native allowed five hits and three runs to go with a pair of walks and eight strikeouts as the Wildcats improved to 2-3 on the season. Offensively, senior Miles Kelly went 2-for-4 with two RBI while sophomore Trevor Juan was 2-for-4 with a solo home run and two runs scored.
Kelly opened the scoring with an RBI double in the first that plated freshman Jack Obert. Juan homered in the third to make it 2-0 before Kelly singles home Juan in the fifth to extend the JWU lead to 3-0. An unearned run later in the frame made it 4-0.
The Cardinals (10-2) scored single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth. They got the tying run on base with one down in the ninth before Vining recorded a strikeout and induced a 5-3 putout to close the game.
