The Johnson & Wales Baseball team fell to the Rams of Suffolk University on Thursday evening, 14-12. JWU dropped to 2-14 while Suffolk improved to 10-5.
Suffolk jumped out to the lead early, scoring five runs in the top of the first frame. The five-run inning was headlined by a Blasé Cormier single to right field that played two. JWU got three back in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Riley Hasson (South Portland, Me.) reached first on an error, driving home EJ Leone (Peabody, Mass.) and Griffin Snyder (Marietta, Ga.). Jack Magane (Walpole, Mass.) followed the two runs up with a triple to right center field that plated Hasson.
Miles Kelly added a run to start of the fourth inning with a hope run to right field. JWU added two more in the frame on an Owen Davis (Bristol, Conn.) double that brought home Nicoles Fortes (Cranston, R.I.) and Snyder, giving JWU their first lead at 6-5.
The Rams added five runs in the top of the fourth, while the Wildcats added three in the bottom of the frame, with two coming on a Fortes home run that scored Kelly. The Rams added on insurance runs to open up a 14-10 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
The Wildcats pushed in the ninth, starting with a Xavier Bothelo (Rehoboth, Mass.) single that scored Magane. Kelly followed it up with a single that drove home Bothelo, cutting the Ram lead to two. The Wildcats got the tying run up to the plate, but were unable to find the game-tying paly, falling 14-12.
JWU gets back on the field on Saturday, April 2nd when they travel to take on Anna Maria at 12:00pm.
