Baseball Earns First Conference Win In Split With Monks

The Johnson & Wales Baseball team traveled to take on the St. Joe's (Me.) Monks on Saturday afternoon, splitting the doubleheader.  JWU earned their victory in a 5-2 extra-inning game.

Game 1: St. Joe's 9, JWU 7

The Wildcats jumped out to a lead in game one, scoring one run in the first two innings.  Griffin Snyder (Marietta, Ga.) doubled home Miles Kelly (East Setauket, N.Y.) in the first before Kelly drove home Trevor Juan in the second. A two run-single by the Monks knotted the score in the bottom of the third inning.

JWU responded in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three runs with the third coming on an EJ Leone (Peabody, Mass.) home run.  The Monks took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, scoring seven runs in the two frames, headlined by a two-run double in the sixth.

The Wildcats pulled two back on a Nicolas Fortes (Cranston, R.I.) triple in the top of the seventh, but were unable to tie the game, falling 9-7.

Game 2: JWU 5, St. Joe's 2

In game 2, the teams played more of a defensive game.  JWU took the lead early on a Riley Hasson (South Portland, Me.) double that plated Snyder.  The Wildcats held their one run advantage until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Monks scored two to take a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame.

Kelly drove home Xavier Bothelo (Rehoboth, Mass.) in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game before they added three in the top half of the tenth inning.  The game winning run was scored but Bothelo, who touched home plate on a Gus Lappin (South Portland, Me.) single.

JWU takes on the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bears on Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader starting at 1:00pm.
